7 Simple Steps To An Amazing Morning Routine
Are you a morning person – someone who can spring out of bed early in the morning with a big smile, ready to take on the day? If you are, lucky you! It’s likely that you have set yourself up with some good habits in your morning routine. For some of us though, it can be a little bit more difficult to get going at the sound of the alarm, and the morning can whizz by in a blur, leaving us frazzled before the day has begun. However, with a few simple steps, it is totally achievable for anyone to set up a simple routine that can help you love the mornings, and set the tone for a great day!

Why have a morning routine?
What is the first thing you do when the alarm sounds in the morning? In the past, I would have reached for my phone, switched off the alarm and then started scrolling through instagram and emails while still lying in bed. Then all of a sudden it would hit me – if I don’t get up now and race around like a crazy person, I am going to be late! Sound familiar?
Having a good morning routine helps us create energy, and the right mindset for the day, from the very start. It is the perfect way to set your day up for success. We are most productive in the morning, so making good use of this precious time will prevent us from feeling unaccomplished, frazzled, or frustrated for wasting time.
What a good morning routine looks like
A good morning routine will look a little different for each of us, so below are listed 7 simple yet life-changing things you could include in your routine. Read through the list and decide which (or all!) things will kick start your day off in the best way, and write them down!
Now the best way to stay on track is to plan for success! Write down those habits you want to include to really help set that routine into place. I keep my morning routine listed on a daily habit tracker that I keep on my dressing table. This way I can see it when I first wake up, and tick the steps off. I find this really works for me to keep those habits going. I have created a tracker that you can print for free here.
7 simple but life-changing ways to improve your morning and day
Set your alarm right
Step 1 – Set your alarm clock a little earlier than usual. This will give you time for your new habits, and allow you to get ready at a more relaxed pace. To do this, it’s important you start by going to bed a little earlier, so that you don’t miss any vital sleep.
Step 2 – Whether you use an alarm clock or your phone, after setting your alarm, put it in a place where you need to physically get out of bed to stop it. This will prevent you from snoozing, or picking up your phone and getting lost in social media and emails. A good place to keep it is right next to your habit tracker so that you are reminded of your routine first thing.
Make your bed
It’s so simple but it makes such a huge impact! When the space we are in is untidy or cluttered, without even realising it, our minds tend to be cluttered, busy, and frazzled. Your mind will be clearer and more focused when the space around you is tidy and organised. It honestly takes no more than a minute or two to make the bed, so make this one a non-negotiable every single day.
Begin with mindfulness
Mindfulness is amazingly good for you! Mindful practices focus and relax your mind, as well as help you to feel positive, energised and productive. There are many ways you can include mindfulness in your morning routine, including meditation, mindful eating at breakfast, or using a gratitude journal. If you are new to mindfulness, a great place to start is with the free Smiling Mind app. It guides your through short, simple meditations and other mindful activities. (Read ways to practice mindfulness part 1 and part 2.)
Cleanse with a lemon water
A simple glass of warm water with freshly squeezed lemon juice has a huge range of benefits at the beginning of the day. Lemon water flushes out toxins, aids our digestive system, and helps balance our pH levels. On top of that, it’s a bonus dose of vitamin C, and is rejuvenating for your skin!
Plan your day
Take just a couple of minutes to prioritise the tasks you need to achieve for the day. Write them down so that you can check them off as you go, without the fear of forgetting. At the end of the day, enjoy the feeling of having accomplished the things you wanted to.
Have a healthy breakfast
This is a big one – it will give your body the fuel and nutrients it needs to be energised for the day. Plan ahead for this – a weekly meal plan will help you to know what to eat without having to think about it in the morning, and ensure that you have what you need on hand. Goodbye sugary cereals, instead think veggie omelette, a power packed smoothie, or avocado and tomato on rye. Yum!
Move your body
You don’t need to have a gym membership for this one! From the comfort of your own room you can put on your favourite tunes, lay down your mat, and find the type of workout you enjoy on youtube (personally I love pilates mat workouts). Otherwise simply head outside for a jog/walk in the fresh air. It only needs to take 15 minutes of your morning, but what a difference it will make! Tip – put your clothes out the night before to help you stay motivated.
I personally try to include each of these things into my morning routine every day. The difference it makes is huge! What do you like to include in your morning routine? Leave a comment below! Happy good mornings to you all!
